Details
Published: 27 January 2026

Widespread heavy rain due but wind won't be as extreme as Storm Goretti.

There is likely to be widespread surface water issues on roads with closures expected and the potential for flooding impacts and landslides.

For flood warnings please check Check for flooding in Englamd - GOV.UK.

Highways teams are prepped and ready to respond to reports across the county.

Barring the A361 which is flooded and other emergency closure gates there are no reports of significant problems on major routes yet.  However some local minor roads are impassable in places.

All Emergency road closure gates are now shut and the following closures are in place:-

New Road (West Lyng to North Curry).

Higher Willand Farm, Churchstanton.

Sampford Moor Road due to closure.

Environment Agency Update:

Rivers across Somerset have responded rapidly to rainfall in January and water has moved down the catchments into the Levels and Moors.  Curry Moor Flood Storage reservoir is now full, water flowed into Althelney Spillway yesterday and consequently the A361 was flooded yesteday and now is closed.  The EA is reporting that they have anticipated the trigger points being met and additional temporary pumps are being deployed to Curry Moor, Saltmoorand Northmoor to enhance our pumps capacity and we expect those to be installed and operational later this week.  They are continuing to monitor the situation very closely and have staff out on the ground.  The incident room in Bridgwater is open and staff are on duty 25 hrs a day.

A number of flood warnings and alerts remain in place and further are expected tonight.

Flooding of some properties close to rivers in the flood warning areas is possible.  Check at https://check-for-flooding.service.gov.uk/alerts-and-warnings

HELP EXPAND ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING IN SOMERSET

Details
Published: 13 January 2026

Somerset Council is investing £3.78M from the government to enhance electric vehicle (EV) charging.  Residents can suggest locations for at least 1,606  new charge points (3.5kW and 7kW) focusing on serving those without off-street parking.

Residents are invited to propose sites near homes, local roads, or busy areas through the Council's webpage Electric vehicle charging.

Proposals will be assessed based on safety and accessibility.  Only Council owned sites will be considered for installation, with further evaluations conducted by the preferred supplier.

Community engagement is essential and local input will shape the final locations, ensuring that SC create a sustainable and accessible charging network.  Regular updates will be provided throughout the process.  Your suggestions would help ensure chargepoints are effectively placed for communitybenefit.  Residents can submit suggested on-street locations via SC@s website https://www.somerset.gov.uk/roads-travel-and-parking/electric vehicle-charging/

  1. The Local Government Boundary Commission has re-opened it's consultation on draft recommendations.  It will now run from now (Dec 2025)-January 14th 2026.
